We acknowledge that, even though the site is in
corrective action,'we should retest VOC found above the PQL, and regret that this well was not
retested. The next test is scheduled for the first week of February 2003. We will forward the
results of that test as soon as available, prior to the quarterly report.
Concentration limits were not exceeded this quarter where these limits could,be established.
With the exception of the exceedence of Electrical Conductivity in well SB-1,there were no
exceedences reported. The number of VOCs reported at MW-5 (the impacted well)continues to
decline.
The decreasing trend in pH, and increasing trend in Nitrate at down-gradient well MW-4,was
again indicated this quarter. Interestingly,MW-4 does not show an increasing trend in chloride,
which is a common constituent in leachate, and moves more quickly through the soil than nitrate.
Increasing trends in several other leachate constituents are also not seen.
On the other hand, MW-5 does show an increasing trend for chloride, but not for nitrate. The
chloride trend seems to have begun in 1995 when the landfill was closed, which is contrary to
expectation. One possible explanation is that refuse extends under the drainage ditch on the
northeast edge of the landfill, which may have occurred in spite of the investigation by the
County in preparation of the Closure Plan. We will be investigating methods to determine the
edge of refuse, possibly with non-intrusive geophysical methods.
