Foothill Sanitary Landfill — Module 1 December 2003
County of San Joaquin Job No. 031602.00.02
0 • Modified Proctor (ASTM D-1557)
n
Vector's CQA Monitors conducted four () moisture -density relationship tests
(ASTM D-1557) for compaction references. The results of these tests are included
in Appendix E.
• Moisture and Density Testing
CQA Monitors performed 48 passing in-place unit weight (ASTM D-2922) and in-
place moisture content (ASTM D-2216) tests during the compaction of the
sideslope subgrade soil materials. Based on 5,750 cy of prepared material, the total
number of passing tests performed corresponds to a frequency of 1 per 119 cy,
which satisfies the minimum required frequency of 1 per 250 cy.
Areas that failed to meet the acceptable compaction were reworked and/or
replaced and retested. Summaries of the field moisture/density testing are
tabulated in Appendix E.
Density Verification
• Sand Cone Density
To verify the in situ density determination by the nuclear gauge, the wet density
values obtained by the nuclear gauge were compared to the wet density
determined from the sand cone tests. Four (4) sandcone tests were conducted at
a frequency on 1 per 1,438 cy, which meets the specified frequency of 1 per 3,000
cy. Results indicated that on average the wet density obtained by the sand cone
samples were within 0.2 pcf of the nuclear gauge and thus deemed acceptable.
Results of the density testing conducted by the sand cone method are included in
Appendix E.
Upon completion of the sideslope subgrade, the Contractor prepared the surface for
geosynthetics placement by smooth drum rolling the area. Vector's CQA Monitor
observed the smooth drum rolling procedure and advised the Contractor of areas where
ridges, rough areas, voids, and exposed gravel were present so that these areas could
be reworked. Once the surface preparation was complete, the area was approved for
geosynthetics placement. A subgrade acceptance form was prepared by Vector's CQA
Monitor and signed by D&E prior to geosyntetic placement. Subgrade acceptance
forms are presented in Appendix D.
Vector Engineering, Inc. • 143E Spring Hill Drive • Grass Valley, CA 95945 • (530) 272-2448
17
