Subsurface LFG migration is monitored at wells SG-2 through SG-10 and SG-12, which
comprise the monitoring perimeter. The site is in compliance with Title 27, Section 20919.5 et
seq (control of explosive gases) at this time.
The concentrations of VOCs are monitored by sampling at all soil gas wells and at the soil gas
trench beneath Module 1. During the second quarter of 2004, VOCs were detected in all of the
soil gas samples. The highest VOC concentration was found in SG-1, which is closest to the
landfill (Appendix B).
A LFG collection and treatment system is not installed at this time; however, installation of such
a system is scheduled for 2006.
3.3.2. Leachate
3.3.2.1. General
Leachate is water that comes in contact with waste. Leachate is primarily a result of infiltrating
rain water, although some moisture is released through waste decomposition and consolidation
of the waste mass. Leachate from MSW is a mixture of soluble organic and inorganic
constituents, suspended solids, and bacteriological constituents.
The quantity of leachate generated in MSW landfills is dependent on the following factors:
• Infiltration
• Surface water run-on
• Evapotranspiration
• Final cover design
• Waste field capacity
• Waste compression
• Age of the site
Foothill Sanitary Landfill Page 13 of 62 Public Works/Solid Waste
JTD County of San Joaquin—Revised 10/6/05
