A single
trace VOC (acetone) was detected in the samples collected from all three monitoring wells on
January 31. Our suspicion that this was caused by laboratory or other contamination was
confirmed when the retest of May 4 did not find acetone. Such sporadic and inconsistent findings
reflect the extreme sensitivity of the analyses and the difficulty in making any laboratory
environment contaminant-free.
With the exception of these sporadic"detections" and false positive reports due to laboratory
contamination, no VOCs have been found at Foothill Sanitary Landfill since October 2002. The
presence of VOCs in the soil gas at least since monitoring began in October 2003 and the absence
' of impact by VOCs to groundwater at any well since February 2002 seems to indicate that the
presence of VOCs at these concentrations does not threaten the groundwater at this landfill.
Surface water was sampled this semester. The results were unremarkable.
If you have any questions, please call me at(209)468-8504.
Sincerely, ,
' W.
