information concerning the waste stream based on both weight and
volume. Information for the other facilities is based on volume
and is more general in nature.
OVERALL CONVERSION Parmn
Since not all of disposal sites in the County have scales to weigh
incoming waste, a conversion factor, to convert cubic yards to
tons, was developed using data compiled at the Lovelace Transfer
Station. The conversion factor assumes that waste quantities and
weights received at the Lovelace Transfer station are similar to
those at other disposal facilities.
The conversion factor was calculated by dividing the total tons
leaving the transfer station during 1989, (125, 815 tons) by the
total cubic yards received at the transfer station during 1989
(682, 263 cy) . The result, . 184, is the conversion factor used in
this report to convert cubic yard data to tons for the following
sites: - Forward, Inc. Sanitary Landfill
- Corral Hollow Sanitary Landfill
The . 184 conversion factor is equivalent to 368 pounds per cubic
yard.
SMALL VEHICLE CONVERSION FACTOR
Although both the Lovelace Transfer Station and the Harney Lane
Landfill have scales, only larger vehicles are weighed, while
smaller vehicles are not. Therefore, it is necessary to calculate
a factor to convert the cubic yard volume of smaller vehicle non-
weighed waste to tons. In developing this conversion factor, it
is assumed that waste delivered to the Lovelace Transfer station
in smaller vehicles is similar in weight to the small vehicle waste
at other County sites. Thus, the conversion factor calculated for
the Lovelace Transfer Station is applicable to other sites for
similar vehicle type non-weighed waste. This factor was calculated
as follows:
Total tons transferred from the LTS 1989 . . . . . 125, 815
Less: Weight of incoming weighed waste. . . . . . . _92_,130
Equals: Weight of non-weighed incoming waste. 33 , 685
Divided by: cy volume of incoming
non-weighed waste. . . . . . . . 138, 314
Equals: Conversion factor for cy to tons. . . . . .24354
Thus, the .2435 factor, or 487 pounds per cubic yard, is used in
this report to convert non-weighed smaller vehicle type waste to
tons for the Foothill and Harney Lane Landfills.
2
