Cam SL. Information for the other disposal facilities is
P P
based on volume and is more general in nature. Late in 1992
scales were installed at the Foothill SL and began operations
in February 1993 .
C. overall Conversion Factor:
For those disposal sites in the County with no scales, a
conversion factor to convert cubic yards to tons was developed
using data compiled at the Lovelace TS. The conversion factor
assumes that waste types received at the Lovelace TS are
similar to those at other disposal facilities in the County.
The Waste Characterization Studies performed in 1990 generally
indicate that waste types are similar throughout the County.
All waste is transported from the transfer station in transfer
vehicles, which are weighed as they leave. The conversion
factor was calculated by dividing the total tons leaving the
transfer station during 1992 (129,779 tons) by the total cubic
yards received at the transfer station during 1992 (706, 012
cy) . The result, . 1838 , is the conversion factor used in this
report to convert cubic yard data to tons for the Corral
Hollow SL which has no scales.
The . 1838 conversion factor is equivalent to 368 pounds per
cubic yard. This conversion factor varies from year to year,
as the following table indicates.
CY/Ton Disposal site Conversion Factors
YEAR CONVERSION FACTOR
1988 . 196
1989 . 184
1990 . 173
1991 . 175
1992 . 184
D. small vehicle Conversion Factor:
Although the Lovelace TS and the NCRCSL have scales, only the
larger vehicles are weighed. Loads delivered in smaller
vehicles are recorded by volume. Therefore, it is necessary to
calculate a factor to convert the cubic yard volume of smaller
vehicle non-weighed waste to tons. In developing this
conversion factor, it is assumed that waste delivered to the
Lovelace TS in small vehicles is comparable to the small
vehicle waste at other County sites. Thus, the conversion
factor calculated for the Lovelace TS is applicable to other
sites for similar vehicle type non-weighed waste. This factor
was calculated as follows:
3
