A pre-installation meeting shall be held to coordinate the installation of the
geosynthetic clay liner with the installation of other components of the lining
system.
B. The geosynthetic clay liner shall be on-site fourteen days prior to the scheduled
installation date to allow for completion of acceptance testing.
C. The GCL shall be constructed concurrently with the HDPE Geomembrane and shall
be completely covered with completed HDPE geomembrane at the end of each
working day. The GCL products shall have the following properties.
1. The GCL shall consist of a layer of bentonite encapsulated between two
nonwoven geotextiles. The bentonite shall be a high quality, natural sodium
bentonite composed of a minimum of 90 percent montmorillonite, by dry
weight, when tested with X-ray diffraction methods. Its free swell shall be a
minimum of 24 ml/2g(ASTM D5890) and fluid loss shall be a maximum of
18 ml (ASTM D5891).
2. The GCL shall be internally reinforced, through a process such as needle
punching, through the top and bottom layers of geotextile and the bentonite.
The reinforcing fibers shall be a polypropylene thread. The tensile strength
of the fibers shall not be affected by hydration with water.
3.
