4) Anchor lower geotextile component of site-specific GCL to lower
shear box. The upper geotextile component of GCL shall not be
anchored to the box. If the GCL is BENTOMAT DN, the test shall be
assembled so that the dark side shall be in contact with the textured
side of the HDPE geomembrane (i.e., same way as will be deployed in
the field).
5) Spray upper surface of GCL with water.
6) Attach the site-specific the geocomposite drainage net and HDPE
geomembrane (per Section 02778) to the upper box. The geotextile
side of the geocomposite drainage net shall be anchored to the upper
box and the geonet side of the geocomposite shall be placed against
the smooth side of the HDPE geomembrane. The textured side of the
HDPE geomembrane shall be facing down and shall be placed over
the GCL in the lower box.
7) Saturate under test normal stress for 16 hours. Use normal stresses of
1,000; 2,500; 5,000; and 10,000 psf.
8) Shear at 0.04 in./min per ASTM D6243.
9) The testing laboratory should report the interface where deformations
are observed, the initial moisture content of the bentonite component
of the GCL, and the asperity of the geomembrane [GM-12]. The
minimum required interface and internal shear strengths of the
composite liner system shall have a minimum friction angle of 12
degrees and an apparent cohesion of 0 psf and a friction angle of 5
degrees and an apparent cohesion of 375 psf for normal load ranges
from 0 to 6,500 psf and from 6,500 to 12,000 psf,respectively.
b. A sample of each tested GCL shall be cut and tested for moisture content
[ASTM D 2216] before and after testing. Moisture contents shall be
recorded and submitted with the test results. The testing laboratory shall
submit a 6-inch square sample of the GCL from the roll used in the testing
to the QA/QC CONSULTANT.
C. The asperity of the geomembrane [GM-12] used in testing shall be
recorded and the data submitted with the test results. The
geomembrane used for testing shall be the same one that will be
shipped to the site for construction of the liner. A 6-inch square
sample of the geomembrane used in testing shall be submitted by the
testing laboratory to the QA/QC CONSULTANT.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 FAMILIARIZATION
A. Prior to implementing any of the work described in this Section, the
GEOSYNTHETICS CONTRACTOR shall become thoroughly familiar with the
site, the site conditions, and the portions of the work falling within this Section.
FORWARD LANDFILL 5 02777
GEOSYNTHETIC CLAY LINER(GCL)
