WMU FU -03, WMU F -West Leachate Impoundment and Desilting Basin February 2004
Forward Landfill Job No. 021605.03
4.0 EARTHWORKS CONSTRUCTION
As the earthworks construction was implemented, Vector performed CQA monitoring.
This section describes the CQA tasks associated with the construction of the
earthworks components of the WMU FU -03 composite liner system. The elements
monitored by Vector and discussed within this section include subgrade preparation,
clay liner placement, LCRS granular drainage material placement, and placement of the
protective operations soil layer.
The earthworks CQA activities performed by Vector for the WMU FU -03 composite liner
construction included:
■ monitoring of subgrade preparation;
■ collecting samples of the clay liner material;
■ monitoring and testing of clay liner placement;
■ reviewing geotechnical laboratory testing result for compliance with project
specifications;
■ observing installation of a leachate collection and removal system (LCRS); and
■ monitoring placement of protective operations/drainage soil layer.
4.1 Excavation
The majority of the excavation and fill was completed prior to Vector arriving on-site.
Therefore, only minor excavation and shaping of the slopes was required within WMU
FU -03. Prior to excavation, clearing and grubbing activities were conducted for removal
of all deleterious materials such as grass, roots, or other organic vegetative materials.
Upon completion of the excavation, Quartaroli and Associates surveyed the as -built
subgrade. The survey was reviewed by Vector for completeness.
Subgrade fill is defined as the material placed on the 5:1 north slope over the existing
Austin Road landfill portion.
