To respond to your request, this letter discusses the following
subjects:
Factors Affecting Landfill Site Life.Estimates .
® Summary of Forward Landfill Airspace and Site Life Estimates
® Conclusions Regarding Forward Landfill Site Life
Factors Affecting Landfill Site Life Estimates
There are two main factors that affect landfill site life estimates. These are:
• Estimated Remaining Airspace
• Projected Rate of Future Airspace Consumption
The estimated remaining airspace, at any given point in time, provides the "starting
point" for the site life estimate. To complete the site life estimate, one uses the projected
rate of future airspace consumption to estimate the time (or site life) required to fill the
remaining airspace. Frequently, this is done by using a table, similar to Table 8 of the
Forward Landfill JTD.
One should note that both of the above factors will change as the landfill develops (i.e.,
fills) and operations evolve. Any given site life estimate that uses either a different (or
new) estimate of remaining airspace, or a .different (or new) projected rate of future
airspace consumption will differ from previous estimates. Therefore, estimated site life
will change over the life of a landfill.
Summary of Forward Landfill Airspace and Site Life Estimates
The current design for Forward Landfill was prepared as part of the Joint Technical
Document (JTD) issued originally in May 2002.
