1.5 LANDFILL GAS MONITORING 0
Forward is currently installing additional landfill gas extraction wells, and working to
optimize the efficiency of the landfill gas extraction system. During the fourth quarter
2006 monitoring period, methane was measured at concentrations less than five percent
in perimeter soil -pore gas probes, suggesting that the landfill gas extraction system is
effectively reducing methane concentrations along the perimeter of the Forward Landfill.
A copy of the landfill gas monitoring probe data is provided in Appendix A.
2.1.1 Sampling and Laboratory Analyses
During the fourth quarter 2006, depth -to -water measurements were recorded in all
groundwater monitoring wells on November 27, 2006 and the groundwater monitoring
wells were sampled by ATC Associates (ATC), on November 28, 2006. Surface water
stations were inspected on November 28, 2006 and found to be dry, therefore, no surface
water samples were collected. All lysimeters were inspected and a vacuum was set on
each on December 1, 2006. The lysimeters were checked for soil -pore liquid on
December 21, 2006, and samples were collected from lysimeters W-1, LY -A, LY -BG 1,
and FU -03-1.
A single sample set was collected from each point containing sufficient liquid and
submitted to BC Laboratories, Inc. (BC) of Bakersfield, California, a state certified
laboratory under contract to Forward. Samples were analyzed for the parameters
stipulated in RWQCB Order No. R5-2003-0049. Table 2-1 summarizes site monitoring
parameters, analytical methods, and monitoring frequency. Water quality samples were
also analyzed in the field for dissolved oxygen, turbidity, temperature, specific
conductance, and pH and recorded'on well data sheets. The groundwater monitoring
wells, surface water monitoring points, and leachate monitoring points were sampled in
accordance with the sampling and analysis procedures detailed in Appendix B. The well
data sheets, laboratory data, certificates of analyses, and chain -of -custody records for the
sampling program are included in Appendix C. The laboratory analyses and field results
for groundwater monitoring wells, lysimeter and leachate sampling stations are
summarized in Tables 2-2 through 2-6.
2.1.2 QA/QC Results
The QA/QC program completed for the fourth quarter 2006 water quality monitoring
event included analyses of four field blanks, four trip blanks, four laboratory method
blanks, and one duplicate sample. The trip, field, equipment, and laboratory method
blanks were analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by EPA Method 8260.
The results of the QA/QC program indicate that six VOCs (bromodichloromethane, •
D:X2003_021\ForwardAostin_N16.doc\
4 Geologic Associates
