1. SCOPE
This report describes the calibration of a vadose zone flux meter for use in monitoring
percolation from the final cover at the Forward Landfill. The flux meter (Drain Gauge by
Decagon Devices, Inc.) was provided by the requestor.
i2. METHOD
The flux meter was calibrated by slowing dripping water into the surface while monitoring
the output using a data logger. Water was supplied by a burette with a stopcock. The
following data were recorded for each trial:
(i) the initial output from the flux meter (empty reservoir) in mV
(ii) the output when the flux meter flushed (full reservoir) in mV
(iii) the volume of water required to fill the reservoir (mL)
The diameter (d) of the flux meter was also measured (0.198 m) and the surface area
(A) was computed (0.0308 m2).
'J
7
C
J
3. RESULTS.
A summary of the calibration data is in Table 1. The average empty output is 22.36 mV,
the average full output is 120.41 mV, the average volume to fill is 30.4 mL, the average
percolation per flush is 0.98 mm, and the average unit percolation is 0.01 mm/mV.
Tahla 1.
