analyzed for general chemistry and VOCs and the results are summarized on Table 2-6.
As shown in Table 2-6,two VOCs were measured in the lysimeters samples collected
during the first quarter 2007 monitoring period.
2.1.6 Surface Water Monitoring
Site run-on and run-off control facilities are designed to effectively channel surface water
to lined holding and evaporation ponds on site. According to the Operations Manager,no
surface water was discharged from the facility during the reporting quarter. During the
first quarter 2007 monitoring period surface water stations FSW-1 and FSW-2 were not
sampled because both surface water stations were reported dry.
2.1.7 Leachate Monitoring
Leachate sumps are inspected for the presence of leachate and observations are recorded
at least weekly by Forward Landfill personnel. If leachate is detected in a sump,it is
pumped into the surface impoundment(WMU F)for evaporation. During the first
quarter 2007, leachate was observed at holding areas WMU-D01,WMU-D02,WMU-
FU03,WMU-FU04,WMW-FU05, and WMU-FU06. The other holding areas were
reported to be dry by Forward Landfill personnel. Freeboard at WMU-F ranged from
approximately 5.17 feet to 7.75 feet during the first quarter 2007 monitoring period.
Appendix A presents copies of the leachate logs and the freeboard observation logs.
Leachate samples were collected for the leachate pond on a monthly basis and analyzed
in the field for pH and specific conductance. In addition to monthly monitoring, the
leachate is sampled annually during the fourth quarter monitoring period for the
parameters listed in Table 2-1. Results of monthly field monitoring measurements and
analytical results for the first quarter 2007 are presented in Table 2-7.
Review of the November 2006 leachate sample data indicated that of the constituents
detected, sulfide and 3-&-4-Methylphenol were potential new constituents of concern
(CDCs). Therefore, in accordance with WDR No. 115-2003-0049,verification samples
were collected from the Forward leachate sample pond on February 5, 2007. The results
from the retest indicates that both sulfide and 3-&-4-Methylphenol were confirmed in
both retest samples(Table 2-7) and have been added to the COC list for the Forward
Landfill.
2.2 SUMMARY
Groundwater quality conditions beneath the Forward Unit during the first quarter 2007
monitoring period are generally similar to those observed in previous monitoring periods.
One new historical intrawell maximum value was measured for bicarbonate in sample
collected from groundwater monitoring well MW-IA during the first quarter 2007
monitoring period. Excluding suspected laboratory contaminants, estimated trace-level
VOCs were measured in wells MW-10, MW-14A and MW-16; and one VOC was
measured above the PQL in well MW-14A. CLs were exceeded for one or more
D:12007_0043\ForwardAusBn_w07.doc
7 Geologic Associates
