Leachate samples were collected on a monthly basis and analyzed in the field for pH and
specific conductance. Results of monthly field monitoring measurements are presented
in Table 2-8.
Value Engineering conducted a gas test of the leachate collection and removal system
(LCRS)on August 14, 2008 at the Forward Unit. The test results indicate that an open-
air conduit is present across the LCRS units, and no excessive leachate is backed up in
the drainage layer or sump of the LCRS units. A summary of the test results is provided
in Appendix A.
2.1.8 Constituents of Concern
During the second quarter 2008 monitoring event, samples were analyzed for the full
suite of COCs stipulated in RWQCB Order No. R5-2003-0049. The results of the COC
round indicated that 2,4,5-T(a chlorinated herbicide) was detected above the PQL in the
sample collected from well MW-2A; sulfide was detected above the PQL in the sample
collected from well MW-24; and cyanide was detected above the PQL in the sample from
downgradient surface water station FSW-1. With the exception of FSW-1, confirmation
samples were collected during the current monitoring period for each of these COCs
measured above the PQL. As shown in Table 2-2, none of the COCs were confirmed in
the retests samples, indicating these primary COC results were false positives. The
cyanide retest at surface water station FSW-1 was not collected due to an error by the
field sampling crew, and will be collected in November 2008 during the fourth quarter
qW 2008 sampling event.
2.2 SUMMARY
Groundwater quality conditions beneath the Forward Unit during the third quarter 2008
monitoring period are generally similar to those observed in previous monitoring periods.
During the third quarter 2008 monitoring period, eight new historical intrawell maximum
values were measured in samples collected from groundwater monitoring wells.
Excluding suspected field/laboratory contaminants, estimated trace-level VOCs were
measured in wells MW-10, MW-15 and MW-16; and one VOC (TCFM) was measured
above the PQL in well MW-10. CLs were exceeded for one or more monitoring
parameters in samples from 13 wells. In accordance with the RPCMP, eight wells with
exceedances of CLs that are potential impact constituents will be resampled in November
2008 (during the fourth quarter 2008 sampling event), and a second independent sample
will be collected in December 2008. The results of the two retests will be submitted to
DTSC and RWQCB under separate cover. Historically, similar exceedances of inorganic
CLs have been measured and verified in samples collected from DMP monitoring wells
at the Forward Unit, followed by no release demonstrations (NRDs), which have
concluded that the inorganic CL exceedances are likely the result of naturally occurring
conditions and therefore not indicative of a release from the Forward Landfill.
D:\2M_0010\FA_3W8.doc
8 Geologic Associates
