3. ANALYSIS AND RESULTS
Shaw selected Asbestos TEM Laboratories, Inc. (ATEM) to perform the laboratory analysis for
this project. Each sample was analyzed for asbestos by the latest approved revision of NIOSH
ASBESTOS by TEM: Method 7402. The analytical results are shown below in Table 1.
No amounts of asbestos were detected in sample cassettes 4 and 5 (Appendix Q. Therefore, the
lowest possible reading from the analytical equipment can be assumed to be the maximum
possible concentration of asbestos in the cassettes. This concentration is reported as 0.0010
Fibers per cubic centimeter of air (Fibers/cm3Air).
Using fiber dimensions reported in the ATEM report, the estimated fiber volume of asbestos is
0.3125 cubic micrometers per Fiber (µm3/Fiber). With this volume and a specific gravity of 3
for asbestos (as reported in the NIOSH asbestos data sheet, Appendix D), the concentration can
be converted to units of micrograms of asbestos per cubic meter of air (µgAsb/m3Air) and is
reported below in Table 1 (Appendix E). Based on these results, the highest asbestos
concentration detected in the sample cassettes is 0.001123 µgAsb/m3Air as shown in Table 1.
Table 1
Summary of Asbestos Concentrations at Forward Landfill
Sampling Date: April 4, 2008
Averageloi est est,
Avera 1cw Sample Yoinxre v
Sam' to Locat►an gate Gcnentration Coneentritxot
P gate(scfm ) (l iters)
Later slmin
c. ), I#11PS/din AidekszYir
f
1 (Downwind) 2.1 0.0745 1013 0.0010 0.000936
2(Downwind) 1.8 0.0632 860 < 0.0012 < 0.001123
3 (Downwind) 2.0 0.0713 970 0.0011 0.001029
4(Downwind) 2.1 0.0752 1022 < 0.0010 < 0.000936
5 (Upwind) 1.9 0.0653 888 <0.0010 < 0.000936
Blank NA NA NA <0.0010 < 0.000936
1. standard cubic feet per minute
3
