Environmental investigations found
the primary waste material in WMU A contains mining operation sludge which exhibits toxic
hazardous waste characteristics of barium. In addition to this sludge, there are contaminated
drilling muds and contaminated soils which contain hazardous waste contaminants of zinc, lead,
copper, magnesium, aluminum, silicon, nickel, cadmium, silver and chloride at toxic levels.
WMU A is approximately 8 acres and contains 320,000 cubic yards of waste and operated from
1973 until 1984. Currently, it is a closed class 1 hazardous waste disposal landfill unit that is
undergoing post closure monitoring, inspection, and maintenance.
Closure of WMU A consisted of a waterproof clay cover system, groundwater monitoring
system, a surface drainage control system, a leachate collection and removal system, and a
landfill gas collection and detection system. The closure construction was completed in 1989.
A post closure permit was issued on January 2, 1990, for the post closure operation and
maintenance.
We are requesting your participation in gathering information and assessing community interest
as part of our Public Participation Program in preparation for the renewal of the Post-closure
Permit.
