WMW-DOIN, WMW-DO1 S, and WMW-D02. GLA and Del-Tech will be working with
Forward to access these pan lysimeters for future monitoring.
Leachate Monitoring
Leachate sumps are inspected for the presence of leachate and observations are recorded
at least weekly by Forward Landfill personnel. If leachate is detected in a sump, it is
pumped into the surface impoundment(WMU F) for evaporation. During the third
quarter 2013, leachate was observed at all of the holding areas except WMU D-87 and
WMU D-88 AB. Freeboard at WMU-F ranged from approximately 1.83 to 8.25 feet
during the third quarter 2013 monitoring period. Appendix A presents copies of the
leachate logs and the freeboard observation logs.
Leachate samples were collected on a monthly basis and analyzed in the field for pH,
specific conductance, temperature, and turbidity. Results of monthly field monitoring
measurements for the third quarter 2013 are presented in Table 2-6.
Surface Water Monitoring
Site run-on and run-off control facilities are designed to effectively channel surface water
to site stormwater/sedimentation ponds. According to the Operations Manager, there
were no discharges to surface water during the reporting quarter. Samples were collected
from surface water monitoring stations FSW-1 (downstream) and FSW-2 (upstream)on
August 1, 2013 for the third quarter 2013 monitoring period. Table 2-7 summarizes the
current analytical results of surface water samples collected at the Forward Unit. As
shown on Table 2-7,no VOCs were detected in either sample. Analytical results for the
surface water samples are generally similar, suggesting that landfill operations are not
impacting surface water quality.
2.2 SUMMARY
Groundwater quality conditions beneath the Forward Unit during the third quarter 2013
monitoring period are generally similar to those observed in previous monitoring periods.
During the third quarter 2013 monitoring period, a non-statistical exceedance for VOCs
were identified at well MW-2A, and trend analyses indicate a statistically significant
increasing temporal trend for DIPS at well MW-2A. For the inorganic monitoring
parameters, CLs were exceeded for constituent concentrations in wells MW-2A, MW-13,
MW-14, MW-15, MW-18, MW-19, and background wells MW-23R and MW-24.
Statistically significant increasing temporal trends were identified for chloride
concentrations in well MW-13, nitrate-N concentrations in well MW-14, sulfate
concentrations in well MW-15, and sodium concentrations in wells MW-18 and MW-24.
However, review of groundwater flow directions suggests that the increasing trends for
organic and inorganic constituents may be related to changing conditions in background
associated with agricultural activities.
C:\2013-0021\FA_3Q13.doc 7 Geo-Logic Associates
