with these Specifications and the CQA Manual.
G. Protection:
1. Do not route or allow construction traffic, except as necessary, on top of
clay liner once material has been placed and compacted.
2. Constructed clay liner shall be maintained to meet the requirements of this
Specification until final completion and acceptance of the Work. This shall
include all measures to prevent erosion. During seasonal or other extended
shutdowns, all exposed surfaces shall be protected as detailed in Article 3.1,
PROTECTION OF EXPOSED SURFACES, of this Section. In addition,
the clay liner shall be protected from any contamination that increases the
hydraulic conductivity. Any contaminated material shall be removed and
replaced at no cost to the OWNER.
3.10 CONSTRUCTION OF CLAY PLUG
A. General:
3. Clay Plug Material shall be processed to meet the requirements of Article
2.5 of this Specification. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall have
the option to determine construction procedures to be used, subject to the
approval and acceptance testing by the QA/QC CONSULTANT.
4. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall process the Clay Plug Material
suitable for the purpose intended. After processing, the Clay Plug Material
shall be free from dry clods, roots, organic matter, frozen material, debris,
rocks or stones`larger than 1 inch, and other deleterious material. Clay
Material ;shall be thoroughly blended and compacted to provide a
homogeneous material relatively uniform in gradation and moisture content.
5. The Clay Plug Material shall be as uniform as possible, free of penetrating
cracks, and having interlift boundaries completely blended. The soil shall
be compacted to produce a soil structure having low hydraulic conductivity.
B. Compaction:
1. Soil shall be spread evenly over the prepared subgrade with a thickness as
required to achieve a 6-inch compacted lift, with a maximum 8-inch loose
lift.
2. The minimum final thickness and extent of the clay plug shall be as shown
on the Construction Drawings.
3. Moisture conditioning shall be uniform throughout each lift
4. The clay plug material shall be compacted in-place to a minimum dry
density of 90 percent relative compaction at a water content of 3 to
® 6 percent greater than the optimum water content as measured by ASTM
D1557.
5. Scarify surface of each lift to a depth of 2 inches prior to placing the
subsequent lift of Clay Plug Material.
Forward Landfill WMU FU-13
02300 17 EARTHWORK
