Water Quality Monitoring Report
Forward Landfill
is inspect pan lysimeters WMW-D01N, WMW-D01S, and WMW-D02. GLA and Forward
are preparing a workplan to restore vadose zone monitoring points.
11
2.1.6 Leachate/Surface Impoundment Monitoring
For the Forward Unit, leachate sumps and surface impoundments are inspected weekly
by Forward Landfill personnel. If leachate is detected in a sump, it is pumped into the
surface impoundment WMU F (North) for evaporation. During the second quarter 2014,
leachate was observed at holding areas WMU D-89, WMU D-93/94, WMU D-04 N/S, and
WMU D-02. Leachate logs summarizing the total flow and flow rate are presented in
Appendix A. For surface impoundment WMU-F (North), freeboard ranged from
approximately 10.09 to 9.54 feet during the second quarter 2014 monitoring period.
Appendix A presents copies of the freeboard observation logs and dissolved oxygen
measurements.
Leachate samples are analyzed in the field for pH, specific conductance, temperature,
and turbidity on a quarterly basis. Results of quarterly field monitoring measurements
for the second quarter 2014 are presented in Table 2-6.
2.1.7 Surface Water Monitoring
Site run-on and run-off control facilities are designed to effectively channel surface
water to site stormwater/sedimentation ponds. According to the Operations Manager,
there were no discharges from the Forward Unit to surface water (waters of the United
States) during the reporting period. Surface water monitoring stations FSW-1
(downstream) and FSW-2 (upstream) were reported dry on April 16, 2014 during the
second quarter 2014 monitoring period. As a result, no samples were collected.
2.2 Summary
Groundwater quality conditions beneath the Forward Unit during the second quarter
2014 monitoring period are generally similar to those observed in previous monitoring
periods. Excluding carbon dioxide, which was flagged as a field/laboratory contaminant,
only one VOC (DIPE) was measured at an estimated -trace concentration at well MW -2A.
No other VOCs were detected in groundwater samples during the second quarter 2014
monitoring period. For the inorganic monitoring parameters, CLs were exceeded for pH
value at wells MW -3 and MW -23R; for nitrate at well MW -14: and for TDS at well MW -
17. However, no statistically significant increasing temporal trends are associated with
well/constituent pairs that exceeded a CL. The inorganic CL exceedances for wells MW -
3 and MW -14 may be associated with the groundwater gradient reversal in the
northeast corner of the landfill beginning in 2011, while the CL exceedance for well MW -
23R is attributed to background conditions. Surface water sampling locations were dry
and no VOCs were detected in soil -pore liquid samples during the monitoring period.
M:\ 2014.0012\FA_2Q14.docx 8
7/29/2014, Rev. 0
