Table 5-2
(DHS TABLE A)
QUANTITIES OF MANIFESTED
WASTE GENERATED IN SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY IN 1986
(Continued)
1 . Manifest data were compared for 1985 and 1986. In cases where 1986 data were lower than 1985 data, manifests
were reviewed and the relevant generators contacted. For these cases, generators indicated that 1986 data were
more representative than 1985 data. Two waste groups, waste oil and pesticides, were responsible for the major
difference between 1985 and 1986 data. See footnotes 4 and 5 for details.
2. To avoid double counting waste manifest data, route hauler quantities were subtracted and quantities of
hazardous wastes manifested out of state were added to column 1 . This procedure reflects DHS directives.
3. The DHS Primary Generalized Treatment was selected for all but the contaminated soils group. See DNS Technical
Reference Manual , Table E-1 and Section 5.2.2 in the text for discussion.
4. In 1985, 394.70 tons of waste oil were manifested, compared to 147.52 tons in 1986. This reduction resulted
from fewer generators manifesting waste oil in 1986 compared to 1985 and by a drop in the amount of oil mani-
fested. In 1986, Sharpe Army Depot, which serves as a collection center for waste oil from other bases, gener-
ated only 8 tons (rounded data) of waste oil , compared to 61 tons in 1985. In addition, Western Pacific merged
with Union Pacific in 1986. Together the two railroad companies generated 60 tons in 1986, compared with
116 tons in 1985.
5. In 1986, the quantity of pesticide wastes manifested in the County was 1 ,379.09 tons, compared to 3,657.80 tons
in 1985. The unusually large quantity of pesticide waste generated in 1985 was due mainly to the significant
amount of pesticide-contaminated runoff at the site of J.R. Simplot Company. Since the Simplot firm is closing
their pesticide operation, the 1986 data are more representative of typical pesticide quantities.
PJ9 9390502B.00D 5-22 Rev. 0 11/10/88
