Class 2 Procedures
These procedures are to be followed when the work in the space or location could conceivably
® cause some dangerous air contamination or oxygen deficiency. All work in confined space on a
landfill is Class 2.
® 1. Testing as described above. Record all measurements and the locations they were made.
® Also record any relevant environmental conditions such as rain, wind velocity and direction,
® and temperature. Continue to test throughout the work at regular intervals or when the
nature of the work demands. If dangerous air contamination could occur at any time during
® the work, testing should be continuous.
® 2. Disconnect or block off incoming lines that might cause problems.
® 3. Have ventilation on the site that is adequate to control any hazardous air contamination that
® could develop. Set it up so that it produces the maximum efficiency with the minimum of
® restriction at the access point.
® REMEMBER:
® 1. If flammable gases may be present, be sure the ventilation itself is explosion-proof.
® 2. Keep ignition source away from the exhaust of the blower or the space.
® 3. If a suction device is being used, position it so that the exhaust is out of the breathing zones
! of unprotected standby personnel outside the space. If a blower is being used, be sure standby
® personnel outside the space are protected from contaminated air coming from the space.
® Ventilation used must be adequate for the job. If pre-entry testing shows the space already
contaminated to any degree, follow this purging procedure:
® 1. Safely purge the space until testing shows an uncontaminated or adequate oxygen atmosphere.
® 2. Turn off the ventilation and record the time.
® 3. Continue testing to see how fast the space re-contaminates.
IMPORTANT! IF A SPACE BECOMES CONTAMINATED FASTER THAN
® WORKERS CAN SAFELY EXIT THE SPACE, EXIT THE SPACE AND DO NOT
® ENTER UNTIL YOU HAVE RESTORED SAFE CONDITIONS.
® 4. If re-contamination occurs only slowly or not at all, and the ventilation controls are adequate
® to control any problems that might develop, continue with the following precautions:
® 3
