Specimens were cut along machine direction to 14" x 17" for the upper box, and 14" x 19" for the lower box,
with an effective test area of 12" x 12".
2. Geosynthetic specimens were secured in the shear box via flat bar campling mechanisms complete with bolts and nuts (7 -pairs).
CONSOLIDATION:
1. Each set of specimen was consolidated under Flooded condition for 48 hrs @ normal load before shearing.
2. Normal loads were applied using Hydraulics for the highest and intermediate 1 loads, and
bladder for the intermediate 2 and lowest loads.
SHEAR TEST:
1. Shear test was conducted @ 0.040 in/ min.
2. Sheared @ minimum 3_0 inch horizontal displacement.
3. The test specimens were sheared in Flooded condition
4. Test were performed in general accordance with ASTM D6243 / ASTM D5321
using Brainard-Kilman LG -112 Direct Shear machine with effective test area of 12 in X 12 in.
TEST RESULTS:
NOTE: The friction angles and cohesion results given here are based on mathematically determined best fit line.
OBSERVATIONS: 1. No tilting of the system or any abnormalities observed during and after the test.
2. Superficial abrasion on the geosynthetics interfacing sides (typical to all loads).
3. Sliding occurred between the two interfacing surfaces.
Figure #1
Normal Stress/ Interface Stress
Figure #2
Shear Stress/ Displacement Curve
GCL Moisture
PEAK STRENGTH
POST- PEAK STRENGTH AT
3_0 INCHES
m
9000 -
Asperity Heights
10000
Shear
Secant
_._
--
Normal Stresses Applied
Content
%
Stress
Angle
Shear Stress
Secant Angle
Before After Before After
(psi)
(psf)
(%)
M
(mils) (mils)
(psf)
(degrees)
(psi)
(degrees)
35
5,000
10.5
65.8
25.5 20.4
2,748
29
1,514
17
69
10.000
10.5
62.9
25.2 19.8
5,215
28
2,584
14
104
15,000
10.5
60.3
24,9 19.5
7,420
26
3,853
14
139
20,000
10.5
58.7
1 24.9 1 18.7
8,82424
5,358
15
Note:
2000
COHESION (psf) :
own
944
127
N/A - Not Applicable
COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION :
1000
0.41
0.26
0 3000 6000 9000 12000
FRICTION ANGLE (degrees) :
22 2
14.4
NOTE: The friction angles and cohesion results given here are based on mathematically determined best fit line.
OBSERVATIONS: 1.
