Specimens were cut along machine direction to 14" x 17" for the upper box, and 14"x 19" for the lower box,
with an effective test area of 12" x 12".
2. GCL's burnished side was secured in the Top box via truss plate attached to 1"thick PVC board leaving
unburnished side floating in contact with the geomenbrane.
3. Geomembrane specimens were secured in the shear box via flat bar campling mechanisms complete with bolts and nuts (7 -pairs).
CONSOLIDATION:
1. Each set of specimen was consolidated under Flooded condition for 48 hrs @ normal load before shearing.
2. Normal loads were applied using Hydraulics for the highest and intermediate 1 loads, and
bladder for the intermediate 2 and lowest loads.
SHEAR TEST:
1. Shear test was conducted @ 0.040 in/ min.
2. Sheared @ minimum 3_0 inch horizontal displacement.
3. Test specimens were sheared in Flooded condition
4. Test were performed in general accordance with ASTM D6243 / ASTM D5321
using Brainard-Kilman LG -112 Direct Shear machine with effective test area of 12 in X 12 in.
TEST RESULTS:
OBSERVATIONS: 1. No tilting of the system or any abnormalities observed during and after the test.
2. Superficial abrasion on the geosynthetics interfacing sides (typical to all loads).
3. @ 20,000 psf Load: Sliding occurred between unburnished side & geomembrane surfaces for approximately
3/4 inch; afterwards, internal failure of the GCL took place.
@15,000 psf Load: Sliding occurred between the GCL(unburnished side) & geomembrane contact surfaces.
(Photos attached).
Figure #1 Figure #2
Normal Stress/ Interface Stress Shear Stress/ Displacement Curve
9000 9000
Zi 8000 _. } 8000
rn 7000in 7000
y 6000 g 6000
n 5000 N 5000
w 4000 _.. 4000
3000 3000
w 2000 y 2000
1000 (n 1000
0 0
0 5000 10000 15000 20000 25000 0.0 0.2 0.6 1.0 1.4 1.8 2.2 2.6 3.0 3.2
Normal Load ( psf) Displacement (in)
♦ 3.0 emeM %- Peak -e- Y0.000 pe _ 15,000 Psf -..,..°"...-• 10.000 psf .... 5,000 psf
----- Linear
( (3.0 3.0 Displacement) Linear (Peak)
W
At -LAP
Precision Geosynthetic Laboratories
C
Normal Stresses Applied
GCL Moisture
Content
Asperity Heights
PEAK STRENGTH
POST- PEAK STRENGTH AT 3_0 INCHES
Shear
Stress
Secant
Angle
Shear Stress Secant Angle
Before After
Before After
(psi)
(psf)
N ( % )
(mils) (mils)
(psi)
(degrees)
(psf) (degrees)
104
139
15.000
20,000
13.5 80.0
13.5 73.8
26.2 24.3
25.1 23.6
7,138
8,299
25
23
2,024 8
2,009 6
OBSERVATIONS: 1.
