Unsaturated Zone (Lysimeters)
The unsaturated zone monitoring network consists of one background monitoring station, VZ-1 and
seven points of compliance monitoring stations, VZ-2 through VZ-8 (Figure 3). These stations monitor
for a potential leachate leak through the landfill liner of Modules 1, 3 and 4.
Unsaturated zone samples are analyzed for the following parameters semiannually.
Temperature Total Alkalinity
Electrical Conductivity (EC) Total Hardness
pH Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)
Turbidity Volatile Organic Compounds (Short List)
Dissolved Oxygen(DO) Chloride
Redox Potential Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
Unsaturated zone samples are also analyzed for the following COCs every five years:
VOCs (Extended List) Semi-VOCs
Inorganics (Dissolved) Chlorinated Herbicides
Polychlorinated Biphenols Organophosphorus Pesticides
(PCBs)
Organochlorine Pesticides
Soil Gas
In accordance with the Report of Waste Discharge (January 29, 2010)and the Monitoring and Reporting
program, soil gas wells SG-1 through SG-8 will be monitored quarterly for combustible gas and wells
SG-1, SG-3, and SG-6 will sampled semiannually for VOCs (EPA Method TO-14A). VOCs will also
be monitored in any perimeter migration monitoring well in which the methane concentration exceeds
5% by volume.
Soil gas samples are collected from all probes at soil gas wells SG-1 through SG-8 and from the soil gas
trench under Module 4. Before sampling, the methane content was measured using a CES-LANDTEC
GEMTm500 portable gas detector. The GEMTm500 was operated until a steady-state gas composition
indicated that the well was purged. After purging, gas samples were collected in Summa canisters for
analysis.
Leachate
Leachate at each sump is monitored monthly for the following field parameters:
Volume, pump flow rate, pH, electrical conductivity
North County RC&SL Public Works/Solid Waste
15`Semester 2012 Groundwater Monitoring 5 County of San Joaquin—July 26,2012
