Any
parts that may absorb organics, such as plastic pump valves or blad-
ders, are cleaned as described below. The inside surfaces of pump
tubing are cleaned by heating the tubing in the presence of a carrier
gas flow.
Sample bottles, bottle caps, and septa for use in sampling for vola-
tile organics will be thoroughly washed with detergent, rinsed exten-
sively with tap water, and then rinsed again with high -purity deion-
ized water. After washing and rinsing, sample bottles and bottle caps
will be dried overnight at a temperature of 150°C. Sample bottles,
bottle caps, and septa will be protected from all forms of solvent
contact between the time of drying and actual usage at the sample
site. When plastic bottles and caps are used, they will be construct-
ed of linear polyethylene. All sampling containers will be used only
once and discarded after analysis is complete.
When use of a positive displacement Teflon and stainless steel bladder
pump is required, the pump is cleaned as described above and reassem-
bled, organic -free water is then pumped through to obtain a pump
blank. The pump effluent is sampled and analyzed for the indicator
compounds trichloroethylene, tetrachlorothylene, benzene, toluene,
xylenes, and ethybenzenes; the results of the analysis must be below
the instrument detection limit for each parameter before the pump is
taken to the site for use.
During field sampling, all equipment surfaces that have been placed in
a well are cleaned before sampling subsequent wells. This cleaning is
performed by steam cleaning the equipment with deionized water.
Prior to purging and sampling, the water level in the well will be
measured with an electric sounder.
