Procedure for the Sampling and Analysis
of Atmospheric C, to C2 Halogenated Hydrocarbons
Method 103
1 Introduction
1.1 This procedure describes a method of sampling and
analyzing atmospheric concentrations Of CI to C2
halogenated hydrocarbons in the range of 0.004 to
1.0 parts per billion (ppb).
1.2 Lower concentrations may be analyzed by increasing the
sample volume and using a cryogenic trap to concentrate
the sample.
1.3 Higher concentrations may be analyzed by direct inject-
ion of a diluted sample into a sample loop of a gas
chromatograph.
1.4 Compounds which can be analyzed by this method are:
1.4.1 Dichloromethane, CH 2 Cl 2P (methylene chloride)
1.4.2 Trichloromethane, CHCl,, (chloroform)
1.4.3 1,2-Dichloroethane, ClCH 2 CH 2 Cl. (ethylene dichloride, EDC)
1.4.4 1,1.,l -Trichloroethane, C13CCH3., (methyl chloroform)
1.4.5 Tetrachloromethane, CC14, (carbon tetrachloride)
1.4.6 Trichloroethene, Cl 2C=CHC1,,(trichloroethylene, TCE)
1.4.7 1,2-Dibromoethane, BrCH 2CH2Br, (ethylene dibromide, EDB)
1.4.8 Tetrachloroethene, C12C=CC12,, (perchloroethylene, FERC)
2 Method
2.1 Air is sampled into a Tedlar bag at a calibrated and
controlled flow during selected time intervals as des-
cribed in Appendix A, "Procedure for Atmospheric Ted -
lar Bag Sampling".
2.2 A measured volume of the air sample is transferred by
a syringe into the chromatograph.
2.3 The components are separated by a specified column and
analyzed by an electron capture detector.
2.4 An electronic integrator quantitates the halogenated
hydrocarbons by integrating the peak areas and cal-
culating concentrations from a factor determined dur-
ing calibration with a halogenated hydrocarbons
N
