I[]
91
J. H. KLEINFELDER & ASSOCIATES
File: W-2022-1/11:312
June 19, 1986
Page 5
One of the areas where Lone Star Industries attempted to
develop wells is just southwest of the existing city dump in
the Corral Hollow wash, on the approximate border of the
site. This was attempted in the 1940s and no sufficient
quantities of ground water were encountered. They moved
approximately two miles to the northeast and encountered
sufficient quantities to supply their gravel pit operations.
Today, an approximate 60 -foot deep domestic well is in use in
the Corral Hollow alluvium which supplies the ranch located
approximately one mile upstream from the dump.
Two Lone Star Industries wells are producing approximately
1,250 to 1,300 gpm (gallons per minute) and are approximately
500 feet deep. The Granite Construction well is producing
approximately 1,000 gpm and is approximately 400 feet deep.
This well was developed in May 1981, and was run at full
capacity for approximately three months with no noticeable
reduction in capacity or drawdown of ground water. A farmers
well located approximately 1/2 mile north of the site has
been producing approximately 1,000 gpm from an 800 -foot well
for irrigation purposes since 1956. Two wells developed in
the Country Estates Subdivision each produce approximately
750 gpm and are approximately 800 feet deep. Information
obtained from the Department of Water Resources, 1953 to
1971, generally indicates poor quality water with spotted
good quality areas. The data indicate sulfate concentrations
varying from 159 to 786 mg/L, chloride concentrations of 55
to 294 mg/L, and TDS (total dissolved solids) up to 1,775
mg/L. State standards allow for a maximum of 500 mg/L for
sulfates or chlorides and a maximum of 1,000 mg/L for TDS in
order for water to be considered potable.
Our firm obtained water samples for a home in Country Estates
Subdivision, the well at Granite Construction's gravel pit,
and a farmer's well approximately 1/2 mile northeast of the
site. Chemical tests indicate chloride concentrations of 102
mg/L, sulfate concentrations of 257 mg/L, and TDS of 810 mg/L
at Granite's gravel pit; 126 mg/L of chlorides, 349 mg/L of
sulfates, and 920 mg -/L TDS at the farmer's well; and 146 mg/L
of chlorides, 817 mg/L of sulfates, and 1,670 mg/L TDS. As
at Country Estates Subdivision.
Plate VIII (Plate 3 of this report) of this report indicates
the approximate locations of all the wells mentioned above.
In addition, the approximate area of the best potential for
well development is outlined.
