EVAPORATION POND CODIMENT SYSIEM
BACKUP CALCULATTONS
The following is a description of the spreadsheets used for the leachate generation and water
balance calculations. In general, there are 2 tables which relate runoff generation quantities with
the proposed pond geometry, monthly precipitation and evaporation amounts, and pumping rates
(Tables, E-3 and E-4) to obtain a pond depth at the end of each month. The following
description is provided for each column of the spreadsheets.
TABLE B-3 EvVoratim Pond Containment System
(1) Monthly average precipitation used for the model simulation. Values obtained
from the Tracy-Carbona weather station.
(2) Leachate pumped from the evaporation pond for use in moisture conditioning
incoming compost. This is equivalent to 12 inches minus 50% of monthly
precipitation (assumes half is absorbed, and half runs off) plus 10% of monthly
evaporation from area of windrows (assumes re-wetting).
(3) Precipitation which falls directly on the pond surface in cubic feet based on the
constant area of the pond perimeter.
(4) Surface area of the pond based on column (9), the pond volume at the end of the
preceding month plus one-half of the precipitation (column 3) minus the volume
pumped (column 2) plus leachate generated (column 8). This allows for the use
of the surface area during the middle of the month (an average) to calculate the
evaporative surface.
(5) Monthly average pan evaporation derived from evaporation records for the Tracy
Pumping Plant.
(6) Reduction in evaporation due to empirical relationships relating pan evaporation
to evaporation from reservoirs.
L:\PROJECT1397\DRAIN.Tn Dmbcr 1993
E-4
