INTRODUCTION
San Joaquin County is submitting this first quarter 2004 monitoring report for the Corral Hollow
Sanitary Landfill (CHSL) in compliance with Waste Discharge Requirements (WDR) Order
No. 5-01-176 issued by the California Regional Water Quality Control Board, Central Valley
Region, on June 14, 2001.
The CHSL is located in southern San Joaquin County at the intersection of Interstate 580 and Corral
Hollow Road(Figure 1). The landfill closed in 1991.
MONITORING PROGRAM
Water quality was monitored consistent with WDR Order No. 5-01-176.
Water purged from wells prior to sampling is disposed to the ground around the wells to evaporate.
Groundwater
The groundwater monitoring network consists of seven monitoring wells. Both the shallow and
deep aquifer are monitored
Shallow Aquifer
Three wells(SB-1,MW-4 and MW-5)monitor the shallow, perched aquifer. Well SB_
1 is an up-
gradient well, and wells MW-4 and MW-5 are down-gradient wells. Piezometer PZ-1 is used to
measure the shallow aquifer elevation. The flow in the shallow aquifer is historically bi-directional
(Figure 2).
Deep Auq fifer
Two wells (MW-6, and MW-7)were installed in 2003, and are used to monitor the deep aquifer.
Well MW-7 is up-gradient to well MW-6. Groundwater flows in a northeasterly direction.
Monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2 have been dry since 1990. These wells are retained, but are not
monitored.
Groundwater samples are analyzed for the following quarterly monitoring and field parameters as
specified in WDR Order No. 5-01-176:
• Groundwater Elevation 0 Total dissolved solids (TDS)
• Temperature 0 Chloride
• Electrical conductivity • Sulfate
• pH Nitrate-nitrogen
• Turbidity Volatile organic compounds
Corral Hollow Landfill Department of Public Works/Solid Waste
1ST Quarter 2004 Groundwater Monitoring County of San Joaquin-April 15,2004
