Ak
J. DON LAYSON, M.P.H., AIR POLLUTION PROGRAM DIRECTOR
JOSEPH 0. SPANO, AIR POLLUTION INSPECTOR-CHEMIST
FIRE AT W ROAD, STOCKTON CITY DUMP
DATE: October 24, 1973
On Monday, October 15, 1973, a fire was observed at Stockton's ey Road Dump.
According to Mr. Wennerholm of the City of Stockton, the fire was started on the
weekend of October 13 and 14 by people fishing in the slough adjacent to the dump
The carlessness of the fishermen caused a grass fire which was readily brought
under control. However, the fire had burned its way into the dump before it was
extinguished. As a result, filled material began slowly burning below the surface
of the dump without being noticed.
On Monday the fire expanded in the dump burning about 1/3 acre of material. Workmen.
fought the fire by pushing dirt or the burning material until Wednesday afternoon
when the smoldering remains of the fire were brought under control.
The dump is used for compostible material. As a result, the material is generally quite
combustible and there is a significant fire hazard. The material hauled to this
dump comes from the city's curbside pick-up service and from downtown cans. As a
result, some material of a non-compostible nature does enter the dump. From the
general appearance at the dump, it appears that very little dirt is spread on the
trash. It seems that the covering of sections of the dump with dirt world help to mitigat
the fire hazard.
