The first thirteen structures nearest to the landfill and the vents from the ninth and
tenth structures were tested for methane.
Small traces of gas were found in three units. Units#3, #10, and#12 had detections of 200ppm,
160ppm, and 180ppm,respectively. The County believes that the emissions in Unit#10 were the
result of a detergent used by the occupants. There was a distinct smell of detergent upon entering
the unit and the highest level of concentration(160ppm)was achieved while testing in a cabinet
under the sink where the detergent was. The odor of utility gas was present in both Unit#3 and#12
and it was determined that the emissions were coming from loose connections behind the oven in
both. The manager of the labor camp was notified of leaks. No emissions were found coming from
the vents of the structures.
The next monitoring event will be performed in July 2001.
Please call me at 468-3066, if you have any questions.
MK:vn
NANajee\HI\Gas\2nd2001 camp.wpd
c: Gino Yekta, California Integrated Waste Management Board
LA 11458
