Michael Carroll, PIE IM
Senior Civil Engineer
SUBJECT: LANDFILL GAS MONITORING AT THE MIGRANT FARM LABOR CAMP
ADJACENT TO CLOSED HARNEY LANE SANITARY LANDFILL
County staff monitored the farm labor camp adjacent to the Harney Lane Sanitary Landfill for LFG
intrusion on November 19, 2001. The thirteen structures located along the eastern edge of the labor
camp, along with the vents from the first and thirteenth structures were inspected. For this event, the
County used a GasTech Landfill Monitor, which was calibrated prior to sampling. Our monitoring did
not indicate the presence of LFG in any structure.
Combustible vapors were found in units #11 at concentrations of 100 ppm. However, we believe that
this detection was from cleaning products, such as"Pinesol". The odor of pine solvent was strongest
where the detection was greatest, such as the kitchen area. In contrast, monitoring in the bedrooms and
inside the walls, through the electrical outlets, showed lower concentrations.
Combustible vapors were also detected in unit 416 at 120 ppm. However, the odor of utility(natural)
gas was noticeable, and stronger where the detection was: behind the gas oven. We notified the
manager of the labor camp of a possible gas leak. The odor was confirmed by the manager, who
proceeded to shut the gas line valve into unit#16. There were no other detections of methane in any
other structures or vents. The next monitoring event will be performed in January 2002.
If you have any questions please call me at 468-3066.
MC:dp
NAiamey Lane\Gas Monitoring\2001\4th2001camp.wpd
c: GinoYekta, California Integrated Waste Management Board
1001 "I' Street
Sacramento, California 95812-4025
Ed Hernandez, Manager, Harney Lane Migrant Labor Camp
14320 East Harney Lane
Lodi, California 95240
LA 11458
