File No. 20-1008-49.1 kNj K L E I N F E L D E R
December 8, 1992
LOCATION
As discussed in a meeting with the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board on
September 4, 1992, the location of the test pad will be the northeast comer of at the
secondary landfill site. The actual location of the test pad will be established by the Engineer
or representatives of San Joaquin County. The test pad will be constructed to allow a
minimum of 50 feet spacing between any portion of the test pad and the slope crest of the
secondary landfill.
TEST PAD CONFIGURATION
The test pad will be 150 feet in length. The first section of the test pad will be constructed
of relatively clean or slightly silty sand, designated as SM/SP by the Unified Soil
Classification System, mixed with 20 percent Ione clay (by weight). Selection of borrow
material for this section will be made by representatives of Kleinfelder, Inc. aided by
representatives of the Engineer. The width of this section will be 47 feet. Section 1 will
receive approximately 4 truckloads of clay. Each load is approximated to weight 25 tons.
Section 2, constructed next to Section 1, will also be 150' in length. Section 2 will be
constructed of silty sand(S ) selected and excavated from the borrow site similarly to section
1 material and mixed with 20 percent Ione Clay. The width of Section 2 will be 231/2 feet.
Section 3, constructed next to Section 2, will have the same dimensions as Section 2. Section
3 will be constructed of sandy silt material ( L) and 20 percent Ione clay.
Both sections 2 and 3 will receive approximately two truckloads of clay.
FIELD AND LABORATORY TESTING
During the course of construction, the third party CQA monitor, Kleinfelder, Inc., will
observe the preparation of the test pad. During the preparation of the test pad, Kleinfelder,
Inc. will monitor compaction operations and through tests performed with a nuclear density
probe conducted at the average rate of one test every 1000 square feet. Laboratory
determinations of maximum dry density will be conducted according to the ASTM D-1557
test procedure on samples of the test pad soils sampled once the mixing process has been
completed and prior to the commencement of compaction operations. Each test pad will be
staked in the field by the Engineer prior to the commencement of construction. As previously
mentioned, all other tests described in Table 7-3 of the CQA Plan, attached. Kleinfelder, Inc.
will backfill rod holes made in association with nuclear density testing with bentonitye clay.
SITE PREPARATION
Prior to commencement of the test pad, the site shall be cleared of all brush, grass and any
other organic matter which has grown subsequent to the completion of the foundation layer.
Any foundation material removed during the course of this procedure will be replaced and the
foundation layer will be restored to its original final grade. Any debris which may have
® collected at the designated site will also be removed during the process of site clearing of
Copyright 1992 Kleinfelder, Inc Page 2 of 6
