File No. 20-1008-49.1 KLEINFELDER
December 8, 1992
• Compaction of lifts shall be performed with an appropriately heavy, properly
ballasted, Wagner FWD sheepsfoot compactor (or equivalent, subject to
approval by the Engineer).
• The daily work area shall extend a distance no greater than permits the
maintenance of moist-soil conditions and construction operations. Desiccation
and crusting of the lift surface shall be avoided as much as possible.
• If desiccation and crusting of the lift surface occurs, the desiccated zone shall
be removed and the exposed surface shall be scarified and moisture conditioned
before remediation filling and compaction or subsequent filling and compaction
is permitted.
• The measurement for thickness of soil liner shall take into account the
sheepsfoot indentions of the upper lift.
• If any area where heavy construction equipment cannot be used, a pure
imported clay soil will be required. Compaction of soil along the edge of any
construction appurtenances shall be achieved by hand application and hand
compaction of the soil. At this time, there are no known construction
appurtenances at the site.
• The location and frequency of field and laboratory testing shall be as set forth
in Section 7.2 or as modified by the CQA monitor.
• The compacted soil liner shall have a permeability of 1x106 cm/sec or less.
• During construction, finished lifts or sections of compacted test pad shall be
sprinkled with water as required to prevent drying and desiccation prior to field
testing.
ANALYSIS AND REPORT
Kleinfelder will evaluate the data from the construction and testing processes and develop
minimum specifications for the construction of the barrier layer. The results of the test pad
and specifications recommended by Kleinfelder will be in the form of a letter report to the
Engineer. Modifications to the mix design or construction practices based on the test pad
results will be included, if necessary.
Copyright 1992 Kleinfelder, Inc Page 5 of 6
