kn
File No. 20-1008-49.001 KLEINFELDER
July 8, 1993
FIELD COMPACTION TEST RESULTS
A total of 29 nuclear field density tests (designated 1 through 29) were performed on the test
pad foundation layer and the test pads between April 16 and 28, 1993. Results of all tests were
verbally reported to Mr. Gabriel Karam of San Joaquin County. In addition, a total of three
sand cone density tests (designated SC-1 through SC-3) were also performed at the site on May
3 and 4, 1993.
In-place density and moisture content for Test Numbers 1 through 29 were performed in
general accordance with ASTM Test Methods D-2922 and D-3017, respectively (nuclear probe
test method). In-place moisture contents for Test Numbers SC-1 through SC-3 were evaluated
in general accordance with ASTM Test Method D-2216 (oven-dried test method). Sand cone
density tests were performed in general accordance with ASTM Test Method D-1556. Holes
in the test pad due to testing were backfilled with Ione clay.
A summary of field density tests consisting of test designations and locations, in-place dry
densities and moisture contents, laboratory-obtained maximum dry densities and optimum
moisture content, and specified and achieved relative compaction is attached. Samples of the
materials tests were returned to the laboratory for determination of the maximum density-
optimum moisture content. The laboratory test results are shown on Table I.
PERMEABIELrff TESTING
On May 3, 1993, three block samples were acquired from the test pads for permeability tests.
County personnel used a John Deer 310D backhoe equipped with 24-inch bucket to cut out the
samples. After samples were acquired, test pad holes were backfilled with Ione clay. Samples
were sealed in the field to prevent moisture loss, and were transported to our laboratory for
testing. Laboratory permeability tests were performed in general accordance with ASTM D-
5084 test method. Results of these tests are presented below:
Test Pad Sample Location Permeability
SP/SM 25' S of 9.1 x 10'
Center of Test Pad cm/sec
SM Center of Test Pad 8.6 x 10'
cm/sec
ML Center of Test Pad 9.9 x 10$
cm/sec
Copyright 1993 Kleinfelder, Inc.
