Site-specific information was used whenever possible. In cases where information
required by HELP was unknown or not completely characterized, values suggested within the
HELP model were used. When a choice between values was offered by the model, the value
judged to be representative of conditions at the landfill was selected. Appendix B contains the
input data sheets for the HELP modeling runs (3).
The author of the HELP model, Mr. Paul Schroeder, recommends that the SCS curve number
(used in the model to describe the potential for runoff) be adjusted upward for slopes in excess
of 20 degrees. Mr. Schroeder was contacted for additional information on adjustment of curve
numbers. He provided Kleinfelder with a regression equation he had developed for such
adjustment (see Appendix Q. The curve number for Hamey Lane Landfill was estimated
using the SCS method and then adjusted for slope using Schroeder's regression equation.
Calculations for development of the curve number are contained in Appendix'D.
Three HELP modeling runs were made. Each run had the same climatic conditions (rainfall,
evaporation, etc.) and duration (20 years). The only variable was the cross-section of the
sideslope. The existing sideslope (Run #1) was modeled as a five foot thick soil cap having
He No.20-1008-49
April 6, 1994
Copyright 1994 Kteinfeider, Inc. Page 3 of 5
