MEMORANDUM
TO: Paul E. Jepperson
FROM: William S. Johnson
SUBJECT: California Clay Products Company
GEOLOGY
Attached well logs indicate a heterogeneous distribution of soil
types with possible sand and gravel , as described by water well
drillers.
RECOMMEND - Two or three backhoe excavations to 10 ' - 12 '
depth in area where Group II waste materials
will be deposited. Have a competent geologist
or county sanitarian determine lithology of pits
and also of the 21 ' from surface to invert of
Cal Clay since this ipterval will be filled.
Run typical M.A. ' s (mechanical analyses) of
backhoe material if geologist or sanitarian
does not make visual inspection (i .e. , confirm
lithology at site) . Obtain test hole logs
and data that McCarty mentions for study.
Reference ground surface, pit bottom, and ground-
water elevation to USGS datum.
HYDROLOGY
Depth of water at 48' below ground surface (measured by Noack) is
reasonable over a larger area. Department of Water Resources
wells intercepted water in this range. Rxecliopal_gradient is
northeasterl toward Stockton in the Fre :Mpp area. If Cal
Clay weil is at nortnena or wes si e ot "p-177tiseful for monitor-
ing. Proximity of Walker Slough suggests tight lithology.
RECOMMEND - Sample well for necessary constituent testing:
(1) for base line conditions , (2) annually in
late fall (start of water year) .
ENGINEERING
RECOMMEND - Grading of site; placement of materials in ap-
proved locations if lithology not uniform over
area; exclusion of runoff from surface drainage;
pit water accumulated in clay-base area for sum-
mer evaporation; listing of land uses within
1 ,000 feet to N, E, and water well map. Describe
placement and covering of wastes. State intended
land use after site has been filled.
