L
DISPOSAL SITE INFORMATION
Cal-Clay Pit
3200 S. El Dorado Street
Stockton, California
1. Descriptive Statement :
California Clay Products operated a brick factory on a
21-acre site at southern City limits of Stockton for the period
1910-1955 . The southeastern .'ten acres of the site was
excavated for brick clay and found to be tight solid clay
from surface to ground water table (presently 48 feet) . The
clay quarry was excavated to approximately 20 feet in depth.
Upon cessation of brick-making operations , the quarry was
made available for commercial disposal of Class III materials
(dirt and broken concrete by building and road contractors) .
Commencing in 1973 , the eastern three acres of the pit
were made available for the disposal by Learner Company
(automobile demolition) of limited Class II materials
(nonliquid, nonpetroleum, nonputrescent , inert material) .
At that time the California Regional Water Quality Control
Board and San Joaquin Local Health District required water
well logs (there is a water well at western edge of the Pit) ,
and trench cuts in bottom of pit, with a lithology evaluation
by Board Staff Geophysicist. A permit was issued June 15 , 1973 ,
for Class III and limited Class II materials with the additional
requirement , as to the j imited Class II materials , of
intermediate cover in order to prevent any spontaneous
combustion. Since that date until the present time Class III
and limited Class II materials (automobile demolition waste
only) have continued on a weekly basis . No problems of noise,
odors , litter, dust, insects, or rodents have ensued (the
pit is most favorably located with no housing to north, south,
or east for 1000 yards , and the housing 200 feet to west
being upwind and separated from site by railraod track and
four lane highway) . Some smoke has occurred three or four
times per summer from fact the Class II material is hot from
demolition process and insufficient intermediate cover applied.
Monitoring of wetting down at demolition plant and prompt
application of intermediate cover corrects the occurrences .
(a) Hours of site operation:
Site is completely and securely fenced. Only two
entities are permitted to dump , and both of these operate
Mondays to Fridays , 3 : 00 A.M. --6 :00 P.M. ..
