Clayton Group Services Page 5
Standard Operating Procedures
SOP -7 - Groundwater Sampling
regarding the need for preservatives. If preservatives are being used, gloves and goggles
should be worn.
All sampling bottles and containers should be pre -cleaned, generally provided in such
condition by the analytical laboratory. The container is sealed at the laboratory and
opened only in the field just prior to pouring the water in from the sampling device. The
required volume, type of container, and number of containers per sample varies on the
type of analyses to be performed, concentration levels, and on the laboratory. All sample
containers should be filled completely, generally with a meniscus on top to assure that no
air is present after sealing. Samples should be sealed immediately, properly labeled, put
in plastic zip -lock bags, and placed in a latching cooler with ice or blue ice for transport
under chain -of -custody protocol to the laboratory.
9. Sample Blanks -
Typically, two types of blanks are used in a groundwater sampling program:
Field Blanks - Field blanks are used when equipment has been decontaminated between
sampling events to determine whether the decontamination procedures have been
effective. A field blank is produced by running the distilled/deionized water through the
cleaned sampling devises, generally back into the original water container, but with small
samples into a sample container. After collection, the field blanks are labeled and placed
in the same transport container (cooler) as the samples for storage and transport to the
laboratory.
Trip Blanks - Trip blanks are prepared in the laboratory and generally are a set of bottles
filled with distilled/deionized water from the same source used to prepare the field
blanks. They are shipped to the field site in the same container as the sample bottles,
remain in the shipped container, and returned to the laboratory unopened. Their purpose
is to determine if sample bottles, sample shipment, or handling have had any effects on
sample chemistry.
The number of field and trip blanks is dependent on the QA'QC protocol, but commonly
one trip blank and one field blank are used for every 10 groundwater samples.
10. Storage and Transport
Once samples are collected, chemically preserved, if required, labeled, and placed in a
chilled cooler, they should be transferred to the laboratory under chain -of -custody
protocol, with completed chain -of -custody forms, as soon as possible, preferably on the
dame day that they were collected. Maximum holding times for analyses must be
followed. Hand delivery or courier service is preferred; however, FedEx does provide
chain -of -custody delivery if necessary. In any case, the samples should be well packed,
securely sealed, and the outer container marked "fragile' to minimize the possibility of
breakage during transport.
S:A6nnrAProiASOPSySOP-Zdoc
