/Ma__I>-28-02 08:53A P.02 <br />.4 <br />o` • <br />-I M IR) I IR <br />Sacramento Co -Composting Project . <br />Nilsen Fauns Composting Pilot Project Description <br />The purpose of the Sacramento Co-Compbsting Project is to evaluate the technical and <br />economic feasibility of marketing a manure/green waste co -compost in the Sacramento <br />area. A pilot project to assess the characteristics of the co -compost will he performed at the <br />Nilsen Fauns composting. facility located at 17.200 Liberty Rd. in Galt. Approximately five <br />hundred eubic'yards (500yd`) ofgreen waste will he'added to manure to produce a co - <br />compost to be marketed by the City of Sacramento with a grant from the USEPA Region <br />IX. The City of Sacramento will arrange for transportation of green waste and the finished <br />compost to' and•from the Nilsen site beginning May, 13, 2002. <br />The compostingproce;ss will he conducted in accordance with all applicable regulations lbr. <br />pathogen reduction, heaver metals, and water quality protection. 'I'lie green waste will be <br />processed through a•trommel screen to remove any -debris before heing mixed with equal <br />parts dairy manure and farmed into 10' windrows.. Thewindrow will bd turned a. minimum <br />of five (5) times during the 15 day active decomposition stage during Which time the pile <br />temperature will be maintained at or above 55°C (131°F) to ensure adequate -pathogen <br />reduction. The composted material will be left to cure for a minimum of 90 days. The total <br />composting* process will last approximately 1.20 days. <br />Miscellaneous trash and debris mixed -in with the great waste will be scrioened from the <br />materials and properly disposed of. Nilsen farms will furnish additional trash containers <br />from its Wilton turkey operation 1fneeded. The City of Sacramento will be responsible for <br />ensuring. Wardous materials are not present in the green waste and if uny is subsequently <br />found, will handle and Properly dispose of said waste. No biosolids or other.lturnan waste. <br />will knowingly be added to the grcan'waste or manure feed stocks. <br />In order to protect water quality, the composting process will only commence once <br />sul'iYcient space has been made. available at the existing composting site (see attached <br />map). Any runoff from the composting pad will drain into an adjacent dctcntion pond'. No <br />further composting of green waste wi I1 be done at that site:without prior approval from the <br />San Joaquin County Department of Fnvironinen'tal Hettithi and all other applicable . <br />regulatory agencies. <br />The City of Sacrammto will arrange sampling; and laboratory analysis of the finished co - <br />compost. Quantitative assessment of the co -compost will be provided for the following <br />fourteen parameters (14): pl1., soluble salt concentration, nutrient concentration (N -P -K, <br />Ca, Mg), water holding capacity, bulk density (yd3), moisture content, organic matter <br />content, particle size,. cation exchange capacity, humic acid content, organic carbon . <br />content, inorganic nitrogen, ammonium tiitrate, and total nitrogen: The City of Sacramento, <br />at.its discretion, may modify the parameters and/or also conduct compost maturity field <br />tests using commercially available testing kits.
