x 17867(a)(2)-Vectors/Odor/Litter/Hazard/Nuisance/Noise/Dust
Comments: A high concentration of flies was observed onsite during this inspection.
1. All handling activities shall be conducted in a manner that minimizes vectors, odor impacts, litter, hazards,
nuisances, and noise impacts; and minimizes human contact with, inhalation, ingestion, and transportation of
dust, particulates, and pathogenic organisms.
2. Implement vector control measures to minimize adult fly population and discourage fly breeding onsite.
Notes:
1.)Currently facility is not composting. There is no active compost in the compost bunker. Facility finished composting
on May 11, 2015.
2.) Facility provided a temperature log which indicates that finished compost temperatures are not exceeding dangerous
fire levels.
3.)According to facility, no compost has been removed since the previous inspection. There is approximately 300 cubic
yards of finished compost onsite.
4.)Temperatures were taken from three different sections of the finished compost pile. The temperatures were 100, 92,
and 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
5.)Temperatures were taken of a few cubic yards of compost remaining at post 3. The pile had an internal temperature
of 81 degrees Fahrenheit.
6.)Temperatures were taken of piles of sawdust and dry chicken manure. The internal temperature of these piles was
82 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit respectively.
7.) Karl stated that the increase in flies is seasonal resulting from the harvesting of crops at surrounding farms.
