Cyanide <br />Cyanide is a white solid with a faint almond odor. <br />Short-term exposure to cyanide salts may be rapidly- fatal if <br />inhaled'or ingested. Larger doses by inhalation or swallowing may <br />cause rapid loss of consciousness; cessation of breathing, and <br />death. At lower levels of exposure, earlier symptoms include <br />weakness, headache, confusion, nausea, and vomiting and may be <br />followed by unconsciousness and death. ' Convulsions may occur. <br />Milder forms of intoxication may result in weakness, dizziness, <br />headache, and nausea. Cyanide dust can irritate the eyes, nose, <br />and skin and in the presence of tears can lead to the same <br />poisoning described above. Strong solutions.of cyanide salts are <br />corrosive and may cause ulcers. <br />The PEL for cyanide is 5.mg/m3 <br />9- -18 <br />
