a
11
Phenanthrene
Phenanthrene is a colorless, shining crystal with a faint aromatic
odor.
Short --term inhalation exposure to phenanthrene, classified and
evaluated toxicologically as a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon
(PAH), has not been found to cause adverse acute health effects.
Short-term oral exposure to phenathrene could cause
gastrointestinal irritation. Phenanthrene has been found to lead
to adverse health effects both fewer in number and lesser in
severity than other PAHs. PAH toxicity is generally based on the
most toxic chemicals of the group -- benzo(a)pyrene.
PAHs are classified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as
Group B2 probable human carcinogens.
The PEL for phenanthrene, as represented by "Coal, Tar Pitch," is
.0. 2 mg/m3 .
47
