MEMRANDUM
TO: William S. Johnson
FROM: Steve Macaulay
SUBJECT: Inspection, tomato wastes disposal site
On 29 August 1975, I met with Greg Basso of Forward, Inc., to
inspect the company's tomato cannery waste disposal site, lo-
cated south of Highway 4, east of the San Joaquin River.
This site appears to be well-operated, with all wastes being
spread evenly on the ground at the time of their arrival. Ac-
cording to Mr. Basso, the waste remains on the ground for a
period of about 24 hours, after which the ground is ripped by ,
a tractor to allow aeration of the soil and promote better de- _
composition. We looked at several of the areas that had been
utilized in this manner for waste disposal duringthe last
several weeks. These areas were free from odors, and the
waste (tomato peels, tomato pulp, etc.) appeared to be decom-
posed to a moderate degree.
After leaving this site, I inspected one other Forward, Inc.,
site unaccompanied. This other site is located near the in-
tersection of Lower Sacramento Road and Liberty Road, in
northern San Joaquin County. This site appeared to be well-man-
aged, with no objectionable odors.
9/11/75 SCMIap
cc: Mr. Gred Basso, Forward, Inc.
oaquin L®H.D., Aon Layson
