Appendix K
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS HANDLING PROCEDURE
This procedure provides instructions for site personnel on handling spills for the
following materials:
Latex paint
Motor oil
Antifreeze
Battery acid
The above materials will be received at the Lovelace Transfer Facility as part of the
Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Program. Those materials are normally given
to County staff at the Recycling Center by users of the site. Once received, those
materials are placed on double containment pallets for temporary storage. Afterwards,
the latex paint, motor oil, and the antifreeze are bulked at the site by County staff. The
batteries remain on the pallet until there is a sufficient quantity to warrant removal by a
private battery recycler.
In handling those materials, the possibility exists that either a small or large spill may
result. In case a spill does occur, you are to:
1. Stop the leak if you can do it without risk. Do not walk through the spilled
material.
2. Isolate and cordon the area by placing traffic barricades and tape. Keep
unnecessary people away.
3. Notify your supervisor of the situation a tely.
4. Wear your safety glasses safety gloves, and if necessary a Tyvek suit.
5. Spread all purpose absorbent on the spill. The absorbent is located by the Waste
Oil tanks.
In case the spill is battery acid, first spread soda ash over the spill prior to
spreading the all purpose absorbent. The soda ash will neutralize the acid and is
also located by the Waste Oil tanks.
6. Scoop the material with a shovel and place it in the designated disposal
container.
K-1
