3.2.2 Storage of Salvaged or Recycled Materials
All recyclable materials after being processed are stored in containers and bins. Containers for
glass are located outside the MRF
All recovered wood waste is stored on a concrete floor adjacent to the western wall of the MRF
and transported to wood processor for processing.
When the maximum storage capacity for a given material is approached, the appropriate recycler
is contacted to remove that material from the site. Some materials such as precious metals,
plastics and cardboard are received in quantities that require that they remain on-site more than
48 hours.
The following average storage limits and capacities are presented below for various recyclable
items at the designated processing areas:
Item Quantity
Green Waste 60 Tons
White Goods 20 Tons
Metals 10 Tons
Plastics 10 Tons
3.2.3 Materials Removal
The majority of the recyclable materials are manually separated and loaded in 40 CY containers
for transportation to secondary markets.
Material removal operations at the MRF are conducted as an ongoing basis. When a full
shipment of recyclable materials is ready, it is transported to a secondary materials market. The
amount of materials and frequency of removal depends upon the composition of the recyclables,
the amount of recyclable material recovered and the efficiency of sorting.
During normal operating conditions municipal solid waste is processed the same working day.
Mixed waste that is not processed by the end of the working day is left on the MRF tipping floor
until it can be properly loaded into transfer trailers the next working day.
Lovelace MRF and Transfer Station Department of Public Works/Solid Waste Division
Transfer Processing Report County of San Joaquin
August 28,2015 23
