3.2.2 Storage of Salvaged or Recycled Materials
All recyclable materials are stored in containers and bins. Containers for glass are located
outside the MRF.
All recovered wood waste is stored on a concrete floor adjacent to the western wall of the
Transfer Station and transported to wood processor for processing.
When the maximum storage capacity for a given material is approached, the appropriate recycler
is contacted to remove that material from the site.
Some materials such as precious metals, plastics and cardboard are received in quantities that
require that they remain on-site more than 48 hours; however most materials are removed within
48 hours of receipt.
The following average storage limits and capacities are presented below for various recyclable
items:
Item
Quantity
Green Waste
60 Tons
White Goods
20 Tons
Metals
10 Tons
Plastics
10 Tons
3.2.3 Materials Removal
The majority of the recyclable materials are manually separated and loaded in 40 CY containers
for transportation to secondary markets.
Materials removal operations at the station are conducted on an ongoing basis. When a full
shipment of recyclable materials is ready it is transported to a secondary materials market. The
amount of materials and frequency of removal depends upon the composition of the recyclables,
the amount of recyclable material recovered and the efficiency of sorting.
Lovelace MRF and Transfer Station Department of Public Works/Solid Waste Division
Transfer Processing Report 23 County of San Joaquin 02/16/10
