Report of Composting Site Information
Tracy Material Recovery Facility and Transfer Station
30703 S. MacArthur Drive, Tracy, Ca. 95377
• Material Delivery - The Tracy MRF/TS and CF plans to operate 24 hours per day
seven days per week. The facility will accept commercial loads from 4:00 a.m. to
6:00 p.m. and self haul loads from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through
Saturday.
• Receiving - Green material, food waste, wood wastes and other organic materials
enter the Tracy MRF/TS site through the gatehouse and scale. Materials are
evaluated for acceptability and pertinent data as to type of material, source,
weight and vehicle are recorded. Unacceptable materials are rejected.
• Unloading - Acceptable materials are unloaded in a designated area and
segregated by type such as yard waste, wood waste and salvageable lumber.
Sorters check the loads for unacceptable material and contaminants.
• Size-Reduction and Mixing - Materials are processed through a tub grinder
where they are shredded and ground. Composting mixes are prepared in one
process by alternating loads of various feedstocks into the grinder.
• Screening - Ground materials are screened into various sizes depending on the
product to be produced. Contaminants are removed.
• Wood Products - Various products such as mulch, landscape chips, and co-
generation fuel are stored or shipped off-site.
• Windrowing - Some of the ground materials are placed in windrows for
composting. The rapid decomposition phase of the process will take
approximately 12 weeks. The curing phase of the composting process will take
approximately 8 weeks.
• Aerated Static Pile - Some of the ground materials, particularly those with food
waste content greater than 15%, are placed in aerated static piles for
composting.
• Screening - Finished compost will be screened based on the product to be
produced.
• Storage - Finished compost products are moved to a storage area or shipped off-
site.
Material Processing and Load Checking
When a truck enters the facility, it is weighed and the organic material is unloaded from
the trailer. The facility's scale personnel are trained to screen incoming vehicles for
presence of unacceptable wastes. This applies to those wastes delivered by
commercial haulers, governmental agencies, self-haulers or landscapers.
19
