consist of virtually no moisture. The lack of moisture aids in the minimization of odors
as well as the composting process. The desired moisture content in the compost row is
about 50%.
FEEDSTOCK CHARACTERISTICS AND QUALITY
The feedstock consists of fresh poultry manure and fresh wood shavings, rice hulls,
and/or grape pumice. The poultry manure utilized in the compost is produced fresh
daily on-site. The birds are fed a consistent balanced ration; therefore the poultry
manure will always be of a consistent product. Wood shavings, rice hulls,and/or grape
pumice are inspected for odors or defects such as mold and/or any other noticeable
visual abnormalities. All loads of wood shavings, rice hulls, and grape pumice will be
visually checked for any contamination prior to composting; they will be removed and
disposed of in an appropriate manner. The approved and permissible site of disposal
will be selected according to the contaminants and/ or unacceptable material found in
the wood chips. A record of every load received and the results of the inspection will
be documented.
TABLE 2.TYPICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF RAW MATERIALS USED IN THE
COMPOST
Material Type %N(dry C:N ratio %Moisture Content Bulk density
of Weight) (Weight to (Wet weight) (Pounds per cubic yard
Laying hen Range 4- 10 3- 10 62-75 1377- 1620
Manure Averag 8.0 6 69 1479
Wood Range .06—.11 451 -819 — _
Shavings Averag 0.09 560
Rice Range _ _ _ —
Hulls Averag
Grape Range
Pumice Averag
AIR EMISSION CONTROLS
In order to reduce airborne emissions, the composting facility is in an enclosed 100 X
600 foot building.
