Musco Family Olive Compan* - 2 - 6 March 2008
The report evaluates the newly installed wells and attempts to categorize the wells into several
water bearing units identified as: the shallow, intermediate, and deep zones beneath the site.
The evaluation in Table 6 of the report is based on chemical concentrations and the Phase I
summary proposes that high salinity groundwater found in wells MW-2 and MW-25 is mixing
with groundwater encountered approximately 60 to 70 feet above it. The report does not
evaluate the application or storage of process wastewater and its chemical contribution to
groundwater.
The report proposes the Phase II Groundwater Investigation Work Plan will continue to
investigate several hypotheses, further develop the site conceptual model, and determine the
water quality protection standard for the site. The work plan proposes to install monitoring
wells in three study areas shown in the table below. Additional staff recommendations are
also included in the table below:
Study Area Well Type Well Objective
Area 1 —Offsite Well Cluster#1 Shallow/Deep well— Compare offsite GW quality
southeast of site with onsite GW quality
Well Cluster#2 Shallow/Deep well— Compare offsite GW quality
northeast of site with onsite GW quality. Staff
requests Musco move the
well cluster southeast behind
the Safeway Distribution
Center.
Canal Influence Well Shallow well— Evaluate potential impact of
northeast of Well Cluster#2 leakage from Cal. Aqueduct.
Staff requests Musco also
drill a deep well at this
location.
Area 2 - Uplands Well Cluster#3—First Encountered GW Assess DTW; GW quality;
well northeast of 84 M gallon reservoir and supplement stratigraphic
between MW-16 and MW-4 data from Boring#4.
Soil Boring#4 First Encountered GW— Provide lithologic data
600 feet north of former 1 M gallon pond between MW-4 and MW-8.
Staff requests Musco build a
well at first encountered
water.
Area 3—Lowland Well Cluster#5 First Encountered GW Expected deep zone well.
900 feet northeast of well MW-7 Assess deep GW quality and
elevation
Supplemental Wells— High Salinity Deep Wells—PDW1 through Water quality and gradient
Upgradient PDW3 data; potential mixing of
offsite/Swale deep water and shallow GW.
Staff requests Musco drill
PDW#4 in the vicinity of
MIN-22.
